JOE DIMAGGIO BIOGRAPHY

"when baseball is no longer fun, it's no longer a game"

Joe ( Joseph Paul ) DiMaggio was one of America's "living legends" and known as one of the world's greatest baseball players. He developed his talent to dizzying heights that captured the attention and admiration of the whole country. His career batting average was .325 and he hit an amazing 361 homeruns! He won 3 "Most Valuable Player" awards and was the first player in the American League to be paid $100,000.

He had impressive hitting streaks that kept the whole country riveted to his performance and obviously he thrived on this attention because he was able to live up to what was expected of him.

In 1941during his 56 game hitting streak the "Yankee Clipper" kept the ballparks packed; radio programs were disrupted for "DiMag" bulletins; the U.S. Congress designated a page boy to rush DiMaggio updates to the floor and newspaper switchboards lit up every afternoon with the question of the day "Did Joe get his hit?"

He shared the secret to his success with the media when he was announcing his retirement in 1952 when he said, "when baseball is no longer fun, it's no longer a game". Joltin' Joe ( as he was known ) treated the sport as the great game that it is and as long as he was having fun, he was able to shine. Money was a secondary issue for Joe, which he demonstrated upon retiring since he walked away from a 4th consecutive $100,000 contract.
